Being Grateful for Starting Anew

Sunrise - Beth Sawickie

This is about a journey that sometimes returns to the same place.  I may follow a different trail here or there, but I usually end up re-visiting some of the same spots.  I’ve realized that I really enjoy visiting most of those spots and feel incomplete when I don’t get to visit them and share them with you (nature, photography, my challenges with depression and self-care – what I call Boosting Your Bliss).

Over the last couple of years my website (like me) has gone through a lot of changes.

At one time or another I’ve written about being an online merchant, self-help type stuff, sharing my experience with depression, the importance of self-care, nature, photography, digital art mandalas and created mandalas to color.

I’ve felt that I needed to conform and find ONE thing to focus on and, well, that just DOES NOT work for me.

My life as a whole encompasses many different things – and I find joy and lessons in many of them.  Many even intertwine and inspire the others.

I really believe that one of the gifts of life is sharing your experiences with others (and vice-versa) – lessons learned, struggles had and triumphs won.  It can help others to know that they’re not the only ones out there with these challenges… and that there is hope… and a future.

For me, that encompasses sharing my challenges with depression, how I’ve learned over  20+ years to thrive even though my brain chemistry is wonky, and the things I do to keep myself healthy (self-care) – things that fill my soul and bring me bliss.

Being in nature, doing photography and creating digital art (like mandalas) are 3 things that really bring me great happiness, so I share them with you here.  I invite you to sign up for my newsletter where I’ll share what I’m up to – and what brings me happiness.  I would enjoy hearing what it is that brings YOU happiness (share it in the comments below).

If you just don’t know what you enjoy – maybe everything just seems totally blah! – then perhaps some of the suggestions I have for finding the spark of life will be helpful to you.  Depression has knocked me off my horse, de-railed my train and taken the wind out of my sails a number of times so I’ve created an arsenal of tools to help me get back on track.

One tool that helps me to start finding that spark of life again is a different type of gratitude journal – something I call Grati-Feeling.

I know, believe me I KNOW, when you are feeling miserable it can seem like there is nothing to be grateful for… but there is… even the tiniest thing, like the miracle of breathing – bringing oxygen into your lungs automatically that keeps your body going – what a wonder that is.  Or getting to see a sunset/sunrise.  The photo above is a sunrise that I was able to watch – it was a beautiful gift.

I’ve created a Grati-Feeling Journal – It goes beyond just writing down something you are grateful for, you also FEEL it.  In becoming aware of that feeling you can start to notice more of it in your life.

Go ahead and grab a piece of paper, a notebook or even your cell phone and write down something you are grateful for.

I am grateful for starting anew and allowing myself to return to all of the things that bring me joy.
Then write down how it makes you feel and anything else that comes up.  (happy, blissful, in awe, just better in general?)

I feel great joy, happiness, whole and peaceful.

Sit with that feeling for a while.

Good, very good.

Repeat writing down a Grati-Feeling daily and watch what happens over time.

Now over to you….

Share with me something YOU are grateful for in the comments below.  If you can’t think of anything, let me know and together we can find something to get you started with Grati-Feeling!

I am grateful for you taking the time to read this – it makes me feel good!

I Am Thankful – truly I am.

I live in a somewhat small town and we’re not all that close to anything.  We have a grocery store, some other shops, fast food, gas station.  The usual stuff.

What we didn’t have (up until 1 year ago) was a Yoga Studio !!!

I never expected one to show up.  Granted, I did wish for it and apparently several others did too!

Now we have Yoga in the Pines.

It is so much more than a Studio – it is a place to unwind, re-connect with your body, de-stress, and meet like-minded people from all backgrounds and age groups.

Tonight I got to hang with awesome people as we celebrated the 1 year anniversary of Yoga in the Pines.

The owner, Robin, relayed a comment a friend made –  that she is changing lives – and it is true.

The good vibes in the Studio go well beyond it’s walls.  We practice yoga or meditate and we carry those good feelings with us which has a positive effect on everyone we encounter and everything we do throughout the day.

I am thankful to for the Studio, for Robin and having the opportunity to meet others who are into yoga, meditation and the like.

I am also thankful that Robin invited me to share my artwork at Yoga in the Pines alongside other very talented local artists.

Getting to share my work with others is a blessing that fills my soul with joy.

I am thankful.

These feelings of thanks and gratitude inspired me to create the “I Am Thankful” coloring page that you see here.

If you’d like to color one yourself, you’ll find it in the Coloring Page Vault over HERE.

If you only say one prayer in a day,

Gratitude – Let’s Give It AND Receive It on This Day of Thanks!

If only one prayer a day…just one… ‘Thank You’.

How powerful that one prayer can be.

Thankfulness – Gratitude.

Each day, each moment is a gift.

Each fan-tabulous thing that happens – and each crap-tacular thing that happens – a gift.

All of it – the leaves on the trees, the birds singing – breathing! – a gift.

These gifts are not just present on the day we celebrate as “Thanksgiving” – they are ever-present.

Let us not forget how much we receive to be grateful for each and every day!

Today is a good day to start a Gratitude Journal:

Each evening I write down at least three things I am grateful for as part of my 4-G’s of Feelin’ Good.

You may be surprised at how your life can change when you give gratitude for things that you’d like to see more of in your life!

You can check out my online 4-G Journal HERE.

I’ve recorded two short podcasts recently that speak to giving and receiving:

How To Receive Thanks From Others as Well as You Give It

How To Give Without Feeling Drained, Burned Out and Angry

That’s all I have for you today.

I am thankful that you took the time to read this post.

Please pass it along to others using the buttons above/below.

Hi, I’m Beth from and I’d like to welcome  you to the Thriving After Life Kicks Your Butt Podcast. Where you’re inspired to take action towards feeling great, loving life and THRIVING! by being an active participant in your overall well-being – body, mind and soul.
Today I’d like to talk with you about receiving thanks, gratitude and compliments.
We can all give thanks, show gratitude and share compliments – that can be particularly easy to do.
(Note: Being grateful is part of what we go over in the “From Blah to Bliss” mini course and part of the 4-G’s of Feelin’ Good)
You can be thankful for a wonderful turkey dinner on Thanksgiving – a time here in the U.S. where we reflect on what we are thankful for.
Thankful for family and friends.
Thankful for kindness shown by a stranger.
Compliment someone on a job well done, a nice outfit, even a new haircut.
But what about RECEIVING thanks? What about that?
Are you like I was? Where receiving thanks from someone else practically makes your stomach turn?
What the heck is that all about?
For me, there were several things…all of which revolved around self-worth.
– I didn’t like attention drawn to me.
– Deep down I guess I feltl not worthy of praise.
– I took being humble to an extreme where I ended up de-valuing myself.  A definition of humble “having or showing a modest or low estimate of one’s own importance.” That’s not too far off from de-valuing yourself or having low self-worth in my book.
– I’d even feel that their gratitude was not sincere and must be a joke. (now THAT is bad!)
Can you think of why you would deflect thanks?
When you think about it – deflecting thanks just doesn’t make sense.
Especially if you say that you WANT good things in your life.
You WANT things to be grateful for.
But then when good things come your way in the form of sincere gratitude you block it.
You put your hands up, up your defenses and block that bit of goodness from truly reaching you.
I have a vision of Wonder Woman (my FAVORITE super hero) crossing her wrists with the bracelets in front of her face to deflect an attack.
You don’t allow yourself to feel the good feelings, the love that comes along with sincere thanks.
So what can you do to stop deflecting thanks and truly receive it?
Deflecting thanks is a habit – an ingrained habit – that will take some mindfulness to change.
First, remind yourself that you are worthy of receiving thanks, gratitude and compliments.  Remind yourself often – make it your new mantra!
“I am worthy of love” – because any thanks/gratitude/compliment is a form of love flowing to you. And also say “I receive thanks, gratitude and compliments with an open heart”.
Head on over to the blog post for this podcast and download the free “affirmation transformation” cards for both of those affirmations – and there’s a video with each affirmation too.
Pay attention to what you do when some thanks, gratitude or a compliment comes your way.
Watch for that knee-jerk reaction of –
“oh it was nothing”, “I didn’t do anything”, or insert your favorite deflective statement here.
It will probably flow out of your mouth before you even realize what you’re saying.
Honestly, I STILL sometimes have that knee-jerk reaction – then afterwards I’m like “duh! why the heck didn’t you accept that thanks?”
When that happens – first – don’t beat yourself up about it.  Remember to be as kind to yourself as you would to anyone else.
Acknowledge that it’s your ingrained habit at work – and remind yourself to be more mindful next time.
Second, if the giver of the thanks is still nearby – you could let them know that you appreciate their thanks/gratitude/compliment.
“Hey so-and-so, you paid me a compliment a minute ago – I appreciate it and I want to say thank you.”
That’ll put a smile on both of your faces.
The key point here is to NOT beat yourself up for falling back into an old familiar pattern of deflecting thanks.
If you need a little bit more of a push to open your heart to receiving…. let’s re-frame this deflection problem this way….
Receiving thanks with an open heart is a gift to both the receiver AND the giver.
How would you like to give thanks to someone and have it deflected back?
How about a heart-felt gift that you give someone – then they don’t even open it, they just hand it back to you and say “no thank you”.
How would that make you (as a giver) feel?
Each time you deflect someones heart-felt thanks, gratitude or compliment you are, in essence, handing their still wrapped gift back to them.
Don’t hand back gifts – open them, cherish them and give a heart felt thank you.
If nothing else… remember this…
You are worthy of love – Open your heart to receiving it in all it’s forms – including thanks, gratitude and compliments.
Don’t forget to download your “affirmation transformation” cards and videos.
And sign up for the free “From Blah to Bliss” mini-course where you’ll experience the answer to the question…. “what would happen if you treated yourself just as well as you treat everyone else?”
I’d like to thank you for listening to the Thriving After Life Kicks Your Butt Podcast.
I’m choosing to feel great, love life & THRIVE and I hope you are too!
